Careers Curriculum

Research shows that by age 6, children already begin to adopt limiting gender stereotypes about jobs, and by age 9, they often start to abandon their biggest ambitions due to perceived social or gender constraints.

CRL introduces children to diverse role models (e.g., female engineers or male nurses), helping them understand that anyone can succeed in any field. Pupils are more likely to agree with the statement, “I can do any job I want when I grow up.”

Children’s aspirations are often limited to what they see in their immediate environment or on TV. This disproportionately affects pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds who may have less access to diverse professional networks.

CRL exposes pupils to a much wider variety of sectors (e.g., green energy, digital tech, or law) beyond the “standard” roles like doctor, teacher, or footballer. A 2024 pilot found a 6% rise in pupils’ knowledge of jobs beyond those held by their parents, directly supporting long-term social mobility.

CRL activities—such as Career Weeks or enterprise challenges—focus on generalised life and non-academic skills that are vital for future success. This means that pupils develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience and develop a “healthy sense of self” and increased confidence, which aids their transition to secondary school.

Our Careers Curriculum

Our Careers curriculum helps pupils broaden their horizons and challenge stereotypes, fostering ambition, self-belief and adaptability as they explore how their learning links to the world of work.

Every pupil accesses their tailored ‘Dreams and Goals’ learning using through their PSHE lessons.

To compliment this, during Spring 1, pupils receive a weekly assembly focusing one of the Skills Builder careers related skills. In this assembly, the pupils will be taught how to develop and use each skill in their learning and daily life. Each week, pupils who are role models of each skill are nominated for a ‘Good to be Gold’ award.

If any employers wish to work with the school to facilitate careers events and experiences, please contact Mrs Hatton via primarypostbox@bloxwichacademy.co.uk

Each year, our pupils also take part in careers week. This week involves work place visits, visitors leading sessions and workshops in school and our pupils using their oracy skills when they become ‘interviewers’. Volunteers share their roles and responsibilities, skills that they need for their roles and the training that they need for their jobs. Over the past few years we have been supported by volunteers from large retain chain buyers, ex and current forces employees, veterinary nurses, optometrists, 3D printers, athletes, fitness trainers, sporting organisation, engineers, bank and finance workers, IT specialists, firefighter, police officers, highways and construction workers, personal assistants, caterer and many more. Many of these links have been made in a targeted manner in response to our pupils interests and the challenge stereotypes.

To compliment our offer, each year group also takes part in a DUCTU careers project. They learn about the roles in large companies such as British Gas, Hobby Craft and the British Red Cross. The projects educate our pupils in the variety of opportunities within large organisations and how these individuals work together for a collective goal.
